Treating Skin Damage

Treating Skin Damage

In my book, “Why Grow Old,” I mentioned various causes of skin damage, which are from excess sun exposure, smoking, and poor nutrition. Of course, some people are blessed with genetically healthier, more resilient skin. The latter, we can do nothing about, so we must concentrate on those things we can influence. I just ran across an interesting and pertinent study by Darrick E. Antell, M.D., a plastic surgeon from New York that is worth including in the New Youth Medical spa web site. This is a study of identical twins with different sports and habits. Specifically, one set of twins, 59 years old, represent a twin who protected her skin and the other had a long history of sun bathing. Note the twin on the left has thinner, more wrinkled skin and looks much older than the twin on the right. Excess ultraviolent rays from the sun cause showers of free radicals which damage the cells that produce your skin. Unhealthy cells produce unhealthy, old looking skin. In addition, the collagen and elastin fibers are damaged and reduced which caused sagging. Note the difference in the sagging of the neck, jowls and cheek. The cheek on the twin on the right is fuller and less deflated. People lose volume in their faces with increasing age, particularly in the cheeks. Have you ever said to someone in the twenties who you haven’t seen in a long while, “You’ve lost your baby fat?” Well, you keep losing it, and those who abuse their skin lose it faster.

The next photos of twins represent one who was a smoker and one who never smoked. The result is much like sun damage. Smoking also causes massive free radical damage to the cells and damages both the elastin and collagen. The result is the same thinner, wrinkled, older looking, and saggier skin. In the photos below the twin on the left is obviously the one who smoked. This makes you wonder about someone who both smokes and sun baths. Usually, you can spot them with ease. This study without a doubt answers these questions for you.

If you already have the sun damage, we recommend a good skin treatment such as the New Youth Treatment products. These products protect your skin with nutrients and also repair damage skin mentioned above. The results are usually dramatic. In addition, significant improvement can achieved with the various lasers such as the IPL, the Laser Genesis and the Fraxel lasers, which are also discussed on this web site.
